Fire Protection for Various Requirements
Fire protection is a central component of safety concepts in buildings, industry, logistics, energy supply, and many technical applications. It is not just about fighting a fire that has already broken out. Preventive fire protection, the safe storage and transport of critical energy storage systems, and the development of suitable fire protection materials and systems also play an important role.
EXTOVER is a mineral-based fire retardant made from recycled glass. Depending on the application, these non-combustible granules are used as an extinguishing agent, fire-retardant filler, or mineral component in fire-retardant panels, fire-retardant compounds, and fire-retardant plasters.
EXTOVER thus offers solutions for active, preventive, and structural fire protection.
The main areas of application:
- Extinguishing agents for lithium-ion battery and metal fires
- Fire Safety and Transport Boxes
- Fire protection boards
- Fire-Resistant Compounds and Fire Intumescent Sealants
- Fire-resistant plasters

Different fire safety challenges require different solutions

A fire extinguishing agent used in an emergency fire situation must meet different requirements than a fire-retardant filler in a transport box or a mineral component of a fire-retardant panel.
Manufacturers, system providers, and operators are therefore looking for materials that can be specifically integrated into their respective fire protection plans.
Key requirements include:
- Non-flammability and thermal stability
- Limiting the Spread of Flames and Heat
- Safe handling and processing
- low material and system weight
- defined and reproducible material properties
- Suitability for different system and formulation structures
EXTOVER serves different functions depending on the application. The fire-retardant can cover fire loads, be used as a protective filler, or be integrated into the formulation or structure of a fire protection system.
Extinguishing agents for lithium-ion battery and metal fires
Lithium-ion batteries pose special challenges for firefighting, particularly when they are damaged, overheated, or malfunctioning. Conventional extinguishing agents may also be unsuitable for metal fires.
EXTOVER is used as a dry mineral fire-extinguishing granulate. The granulate can be spread over the fire load, thereby cutting it off from oxygen. At the same time, EXTOVER absorbs heat. At sufficiently high temperatures, the glass can melt and form a mineral shell over the fire load.
The coarse EXTOVER grain size has been tested as a fire extinguishing agent for Class D metal fires.
Typical applications include fire departments, battery manufacturers, recycling facilities, repair shops, industrial companies, logistics centers, and hazardous materials warehouses, among others.

Fire Safety and Transport Boxes for Lithium-Ion Batteries
Damaged or suspicious lithium-ion batteries often need to be stored, transported, or quarantined until they can be further processed.
EXTOVER can be used as a mineral-based fire-retardant filler material in protective, storage, and transport boxes. The granules encase the battery and thus become an integral part of the respective safety and container design.
Possible applications include, for example:
- Transport Cases for Lithium-Ion Batteries
- Quarantine boxes for damaged batteries
- Storage and Safety Containers
- Solutions for Workshops and Service Centers
- Applications in Recycling and Logistics

EXTOVER in Fire-Rated Panels
When it comes to fire-resistant panels, fire safety requirements must be balanced with other characteristics such as weight, thermal performance, workability, and structural design.
EXTOVER can be used as a mineral component in fire-resistant panels. Its low bulk density makes it possible to develop comparatively lightweight mineral panel systems. At the same time, EXTOVER itself is non-combustible.
Possible applications include, among others:
- Support panels for fire doors
- Fire protection boards
- Facade panels with fire safety requirements
- Technical Fire Protection Structures
The fire resistance performance and classification of the finished panel are always determined by the complete system configuration and the corresponding testing.

EXTOVER in Fire-Retardant Compounds and Fire Intumescent Sealants
Fire-resistant compounds are used, among other things, for joints, connections, and penetrations within fire-resistant structures. When developing such products, fire protection performance, workability, and formulation must be balanced.
EXTOVER can be used as a mineral component in fire-retardant formulations. Its low bulk density, defined particle sizes, non-combustibility, and thermal properties may be particularly relevant for product development.
In the case of intumescent fire protection compounds, EXTOVER itself does not perform the intumescent function. This function results from the interaction of the formulation components designed for that purpose. The fire protection performance must be verified for the finished system.

EXTOVER in Fire-Retardant Plasters
Fire-resistant plasters combine requirements for application, layer structure, and fire resistance performance. At the same time, bulk density and thermal properties may be relevant to the system’s design.
EXTOVER can be used as a mineral component in fire-resistant plasters. Due to its low bulk density, the granulate allows for comparatively lightweight mineral formulations while also introducing a non-combustible mineral component into the system.
The appropriate EXTOVER grain size and dosage depend on the specific binder, the formulation, the application method, and the requirements for the finished plaster system.

Why Choose EXTOVER for Fire Protection Applications?
Depending on the fire protection concept, different material properties of EXTOVER may be relevant:
- mineral
- Non-combustible, building material class A1 according to DIN 4102-4
- low bulk density
- low thermal conductivity
- defined particle sizes
- dry and free-flowing
- Recycled glass as a raw material
EXTOVER is available in two particle sizes. The appropriate variant depends on the specific fire protection application.

From Firefighting to Fire Protection Systems
EXTOVER is used in a wide variety of fire protection systems. Consequently, the requirements of fire departments and operators of technical facilities differ from those of a manufacturer of fire-resistant panels, fire-resistant compounds, or fire-resistant plasters.
PORAVER assists manufacturers, system providers, users, and technical project managers with questions regarding the use of EXTOVER and the selection of the appropriate product variant.
